  This Year Honoring  Production Pioneers

The night's program also will include presentation of the annual DPA Film Pioneer Award in recognition of outstanding contributions to advancing the region's moving image industry.

This year's recipients will be Rod Keitz and Larry Herndon of the legendary Keitz and Herndon Studios. Their production company was one of the early pioneers in animation utilized in TV commercial advertising.

Among their deep body of work, “JOT,” a highly popular TV series produced in the 1960s, and a theatrical ad for Dr Pepper® that appeared in movie theaters as well as drive-in movies.

   HOSTS

GORDON K. SMITH
(a.k.a. "Mr. Weird", the producer/host of DCTV's "Weird Theatre"), is an award-winning Dallas-based writer, filmmaker, film historian and actor.  Born in Houston, he is a graduate of Texas Tech  University and was one of the very first employees of Blockbuster Video (for whom he wrote thousands of VHS box blurbs ).

Smith has appeared in bit parts in over 35 movies and TV episodes (including The Alamo and "Walker Texas Ranger").  In 1989 his research work led to the revival of the near-lost cult classic Carnival of Souls, for which he was interviewed on National Public Radio the following year.   Recently, he was the researcher for the AMC Channel series "Movies 101",  produced special video tributes for the AFI-Dallas and Fort Lauderdale Film Festivals, and co-hosted, with WFAA's Gary Cogill,  "It Came From Dallas", an annual salute to pioneer Dallas filmmakers.

BOB COONROD
Bob has worked from Coast to Coast on everything from commercials, industrials, live events, radio and film. He played Dirk Nowitzki's manager in a German Sprite commercial, he also kissed Ashley Judd and got paid to do it. His wife didn't mined, the residuals were good.

He has been entertaining audiences both on screen and on stage for over twenty years.
Bob was a founding member of the Improv comedy group "Four Out of Five Doctors" and as a Doc they opened for Howie Mandel at the then Starplex.

Later he was a founding member of the Improv Group "Lone Star Comedy" at their own club down on Lower Greenville. Where he performed with Jon Lovitz and Cassandra Peterson (Elvira Mistress of the Dark).
He loves 60's movies, and a few from the 70s. 80s, and 90s, plus anything with martial arts. Okay he likes movies.

Bob has his own production company, Hinterland Pictures and has written, directed and produced video projects for his clients and his own entertainment.

He thinks the internet will catch on some day and hopes to be involved when it comes.
